She never let the cancer define who she was and, instead made a conscious decision to be happy each day, have a smile on her face, and truly love life to the fullest. That was the start of Anne’s cancer, and was followed by the first of several major surgeries on November 22, 2000, and extensive chemotherapy.Īnne’s cancer journey was one of inspiration for all who knew her. Anne would often say that Thomas saved her life because the stress of labor may have helped rupture her appendix, which led them to find her cancer. The next day was devastating, as Anne learned the appendix they had removed was all cancer….and a serious one. On November 14, 2000, Anne had a routine appendectomy to remove her appendix, which they had determined to be the source of her infection. Shortly after labor, Anne felt ill and developed a large infection that nearly took her life and required eight days in the hospital, followed by weeks of antibiotics at home. On September 2, 2000, Anne gave birth to their handsome son, Thomas Cranley (“Beauty Boy”). She and Tim thought they might just live there a few years, but it turned out to be their home of over 23 years. It was a wonderful, special time that she looked back on with a big smile.Īnne knew that she wanted to end up raising a family in her hometown of Madison, so she and Tim moved back in 1999, buying a home on Paunack Ave, just down the street from Our Lady Queen of Peace. Anne was an absolute natural at being a mother, and Kohler was the idyllic little town to allow Anne to take walks in the sun, something she loved to do. They worked together to remodel the home into a perfect place to welcome their first child, a beautiful daughter, Sydney Rose (“Toots”), on July 28, 1998. She and Tim had many a “brat fry” in the Kohler/Sheboygan area and bought their first home in Kohler, Wisconsin, in 1996. She enjoyed the type of work and projects it had to offer. The desire to be closer to family drew Anne and Tim back to Wisconsin in 1995, and Anne soon thereafter landed a great job at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan. ![]() They would often grab lunch outside, where the numerous ducks and geese would gather. ![]() Firms that feared they couldn’t hire the workers they wanted were loath to let anyone go. One remarkable feature of the labor market in 2021 and (much of) 2022 was the exceptionally low level of layoffs. As restaurants have caught up (somewhat) on staffing, their desperation-and with it, the wage surge-has eased. ![]() The frenetic pace at which firms were trying to bring on workers has moved down as panic over missing out on demand has ebbed. Some labor was reallocated, some jobs were filled by new workers, and some jobs were determined to be unneeded each allowed the labor market to ease in the face of strong labor demand.Ĭan the second stage of a soft landing succeed? What would it take to continue to beat the odds and let the economy escape recession in 2023? Optimists can pin their hopes on several labor market dynamics that we find encouraging.įirst, the intensity of hiring has slowed. The first stage of the inconceivable soft landing has played out: Job openings fell, wage growth moderated, while the unemployment rate actually dropped to a multigenerational low. However, the second half of 2022 clearly contradicted that. history, falls in job openings are mirrored by rising unemployment, which is the only certain arbiter of recessions. Larry Summers wrote in early June 2022 “that bringing down job openings without increases in unemployment is at odds with both economic theory and the empirical evidence.” And it is certainly true that in U.S. A better reason for optimism: The labor marketĪ soft landing has been widely dismissed by leading doomsayers. But it’s the latter that needs to fall convincingly.Ī durable reduction of core inflation requires a meaningful moderation in wage growth- despite tight labor markets. The quality problem will be clear in the middle of 2023 when headline inflation will likely fall below core inflation. ![]() Rather, it’s driven by sharp idiosyncratic falls in durable goods and energy. ![]() And much of the fall so far is not of the highest quality. It’s not just the size or speed of the fall-the quality of disinflation also matters to get monetary policy to ease. While those plans can change, with the most serious challenge to the inflation regime in decades and reputations to defend, central bankers are less likely to fold to fears of economic weakness than in the past. The Fed itself has said clearly that it expects to keep the policy rate above 5% at the end of 2023 even as it expects inflation to slow sharply to 3.1%. Of course, falling inflation is important and welcome, but it is unlikely to lead to a loosening of monetary policy in 2023. In fact, just as the fearful narratives of a 1970s-style regime break were overdone on the way up, now the significance of falling inflation is also overstated. The recent euphoria about inflation’s peak and fast fall, which was widely predicted but delayed due to energy shocks, does not make for a well-grounded soft-landing argument. There is no guarantee the journey to such a graceful easing continues in 2023-let alone that policy can begin to normalize in 2024-but optimists can credibly pin their hopes on several labor market dynamics this year. ![]() The first stage of a soft landing is playing out as job openings have eased while unemployment fell. Yet that is precisely what has been happening. Prominent naysayers, such as Larry Summers, all but ruled out a soft landing last June. Think of it as a successful reallocation of labor from weak sectors to stronger ones. Even with high interest rates or slower-than-expected disinflation, a soft landing may remain on track if wage growth eases and overheated job openings fall without pushing up the unemployment rate. Rapid disinflation, widely predicted and likely to continue, will not be enough to unwind tight monetary policy, which is driving recession risk.Ī better reason for soft-landing optimism is the labor market and, critically, slowing wage growth. Having emphasized the economy’s resilience throughout last year, this shift in sentiment is warranted in our view, but the new optimism should be for the right reasons. ![]() ![]() Titanic is at 12,500 feet.Internal File System Support: Different NAS offer different file system support, which can have bearing on a user’s choice. By the time rescue came nine days later-in the form of British and Norwegian rescue divers-all 118 on board were dead.īut there’s an earlier example with a happier ending: In 1973, the two-person crew of Pisces III was trapped on the sea floor off Ireland for 76 hours and rescued by submarines with just 12 minutes of oxygen left-but that rescue was at a depth of just 1,575 feet. Many recall the 2000 Kursk disaster, in which a torpedo exploded on the Russian navy submarine, killing many crewmembers instantly and leaving 23 others in the damaged sub 350 feet beneath the Arctic Circle. Has anyone been rescued from a sub or submersible before? military, which uses Xbox 360 controllers to fire laser cannons, control drones, and even operate periscopes on the Navy's nuclear-powered attack submarines. Yes, Titan is piloted with a gaming controller for Playstation. I read that the sub is steered by a video game controller. But making it to the surface isn’t enough-because there’s no hatch, passengers would still be reliant on 96 hours of air the ship had when it first headed to the site, until a rescue crew could unbolt the craft and get them out.Īerial search-and-rescue is patrolling the waters around the site, but they are looking for an object the size of a minivan across an expanse of ocean, and detection may be marred by weather conditions. That’s possible: Titan has a series of redundant safety measures that would allow it to dump its ballast and return to surface automatically if there is a system failure or if the pilot is incapacitated. Is there a chance Titan has made it to the surface and we don’t know it yet? ![]() So another possibility is that a non-crewed submersible, like an ROV, or remotely operated vehicle, can somehow secure Titan on the seafloor and bring it to the surface. The vessel’s novel carbon fiber composite and titanium structure was designed to withstand the extreme pressure of the Titanic environment, but the design requires the passengers to be literally “drilled shut” into the craft from outside.Īny recovery of people would need to be done at the surface. )Įven if there were a submarine capable of traveling to the area, there would be no way to transfer passengers from Titan to the rescue sub-because the submersible has no hatch. ( Can anyone visit the Titanic wreck? Go inside a lucrative tourism industry. If Titan is at the bottom of the ocean, how would they get people out?įirst, you need a vessel that can also travel to the extreme depths around Titanic-and there’s very few of them on the planet. ![]() The wreck lies at about 12,500 feet, an environment that’s dark (sunlight in ocean water is usually completely gone by 3,000 feet) incredibly cold (bottom temps at this time of year can hover around 36☏ahrenheit, which requires a heated cabin) and under extreme pressure-nearly 400 times the pressure people experience at sea level. What are the conditions around the Titanic wreck site? This communication may get disrupted if Titan is no longer in an upright position or entangled at the bottom. Very limited texting from Titan to the support ship is available via a sort of “acoustic modem” if the submersible is in the right range. Titan communicates with its support vessel using acoustic systems that send pings back and forth to provide its location. The particular physics of water and extreme depth in the area means that technologies we use on land and even in space, like satellite communications and GPS, won’t work. Why haven’t we heard from the crew? Can’t they just use a satellite phone? When it’s ready to return, the vessel drops ballast and floats to re-dock at the platform, which is then raised to the support ship. Four electric thrusters help the neutrally buoyant Titan navigate on the seafloor. ![]() It’s lowered about 30 feet, or below the surface wave action, on a tethered platform, and then uses ballast to drop down the remaining 12,500 feet. Unlike a submarine, which can sail in and out of ports on its own power, the 20-foot-long, 20,000-pound Titan is a submersible, which means it’s dependent on a surface support ship that transports it to a site. ( Bob Ballard and James Cameron on what we can learn from the Titan tragedy.) Their last communication was roughly 100 minutes after their descent. There are a number of factors that will make any rescue or recovery incredibly difficult-including the remoteness of the area, the extreme depth of the site, and the fact that the five-person crew had 96 hours maximum of emergency air when they first descended. ![]() The Oceangate submersible Titan has been missing near the Titanic wreck site in the North Atlantic since early Sunday morning. ![]() ![]() ![]() N has recuperation and regeneration but also the always nice berserker. Jamie Lipeles, D.O., an OB-GYN, tells Bustle. " Changes in the areola can be caused by various things," Dr. If you've noticed changes in your areolae lately, you may be concerned that they're going to fall off, explode, or signal something deeply wrong - but, in many cases, there are simple explanations for areolae changes. ![]() Here are ways pregnancy changes your body nobody tells you about. Most of us don’t spend much time considering our areola (plural: areolae, because who doesn’t love a good diphthong), which is the technical name for that darker colored skin around your nipples. These glands help protect your nipples from getting dry and cracked by producing an oily substance. You may also notice that the area looks bumpier than usual due to the growth of small sebaceous glands (Montgomery s tubercles). In fact, during the last few weeks of pregnancy, the nipples and areola also grow in the size along with the breasts, as they prepare for the breastfeeding phase. With more melanin produced, your skin turns darker particularly in the areas where there is more of the pigment like the areolas. The pregnancy hormones cause your body to produce more melanin, a pigment that is responsible for the changes in the colour of your skin. The front-facing 8-megapixel camera looked good for selfies and video chat, and looked sharper than my normal laptop-video-chat expectations. States, like people, the historian Thucydides tells us, can be envious-and even rude and pushy. Nor did aggression have to arise from poverty or inequality. If war was innate, and its morality defined by particular circumstances, fighting was also not necessarily explained by prior exploitation or legitimate grievance. Likewise, there is language of freedom and liberty associated with the Greeks’ naval victory at Salamis, but not with the slaughter at the battle of Gaugamela-Alexander the Great’s destruction of the Persian army in Mesopotamia that wrecked Darius III’s empire and replaced eastern despots with Macedonian autocrats. The Greek defense against Persian attack in 480 B.C., in the eyes of the playwright Aeschylus (who chose as his epitaph mention of his service at the battle of Marathon, not his dramas), was “glorious.” Yet the theme of Thucydides’ history of the internecine Peloponnesian wars was folly and sometimes senseless butchery. While all tragic, wars could be good or evil depending on their cause, the nature of the fighting, and the ultimate costs and results. No, the rub was particular wars, not war itself. Warfare could be terrifying-”a thing of fear,” the poet Pindar summed up-but not therein unnatural or necessarily evil. Even the utopian Plato agreed: “War is always existing by nature between every Greek city-state.” How galling and hurtful to us moderns that Plato, of all people, once called peace, not war, the real “parenthesis” in human affairs. War is “the father, the king of us all,” the philosopher Heraclitus lamented. Tragically, the Greeks tell us, conflict will always break out-and very frequently so-because we are human and thus not always rational. So war, the poet Hesiod concluded, was “a curse from Zeus.” In others words, killing humans over disagreements should not happen among civilized people. As Classics teaches us, war in classical antiquity-and for most of the past 2,500 years of Western Civilization-was seen as a tragedy innate to the human condition-a time of human plague when, as the historian Herodotus said, fathers bury sons rather than sons fathers. If more in our universities really understood the Greeks and Romans and their legacy in the West, then they would not see this present conflict through either therapeutic or apologetic lenses. In our present crisis after September 11, it also offers practical guidance-and the absence of familiarity with the foundations of Western culture in part may explain many of the disturbing reactions to the war that we have seen on American campuses. The study of Classics-of Greece and Rome-can offer us moral lessons as well as a superb grounding in art, literature, history, and language. ![]() ![]() Infusing trend-forward graphics and prints into stylish silhouettes is boohooMAN’s goal and they do it well.
